The Jagodina Public Library was awarded $30,000 for the project of village libraries for farmers, said Vesna Crnković, the library director.
“Exactly 300 libraries from 49 countries applied for a grant by EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries). The Jagodina Library project AgroLib Ja was one of fourteen awarded projects”, said Mrs. Crnković. “The project authors, who work at the library, had the aim to revitalize village libraries (16 of them in the territory of the Jagodina municipality)”, she explained. “This includes renewal of books, equipping with agricultural monograph and serial publications, refurbishment of library buildings, purchasing computer equipment, setting up the Internet and phone connections.”
“The project includes ICT training of farmers and librarians in village libraries and hosting agricultural lectures and seminars for farmers. The beneficiaries are residents from 52 villages in the Jagodina municipality. There are intentions to introduce the project AgroLib in other libraries in Serbia. In the beginning, the project includes the libraries in Glavinci, Glogovac, Bagrdan, Bunar and Deonica.
Strategic project partners are the City Council of Jagodina, the Ministry of Agriculture through the Rural Development Support Network, the Agency for Small and Medium Enterprises and Registered Rural Households and a civil society Etno Forma.
The project should be implemented through three phases. The first one begins upon signing the contract, this month. The second involves the $15,000 grant. The projects from the first phase apply again for the grant. The criteria for selection is how successful they are in practice.
The blog will include all relevant information about the project, news on implemented and future activities and it will be bilingual. Farmers and their agricultural produce will be presented on the website, and all those who are indirectly involved in agricultural production will also be presented.
“The website will also include the on-line marketplace, news, articles written by farmers, or agricultural experts in various fields, etc. The most successful projects will be published in the most significant publications and presented in the most important conferences”, said Mrs. Crnković.
